Painting for Beginners

The Most Common Block: “I’m Not Talented”
Painting on canvas isn’t about talent, it’s about method. Most guests at our classes are holding a brush for the first time since primary school, and after three hours they leave with a painting they’ll hang on the wall. The difference between “I can” and “I can’t” comes down to a few specific skills: planning the composition, mixing a shade, laying down a stroke and knowing the order in which a painting is built up. None of it is a gift – it can all be explained in a single afternoon.

The tips our instructors repeat most often in class – in the order you’ll need them.
- Start with acrylics, not oils – acrylics dry fast, cover well and you can simply paint over a mistake. Oils are less forgiving and take days to dry. acrylic painting →
- A 40 × 50 cm canvas is the ideal first size – big enough to work freely, small enough to finish in one evening.
- Sketch the composition in pencil – lightly outline the main shapes. The most common beginner mistake is starting with a detail in the corner.
- Work from the background to the foreground – sky and large areas first, the tree and the little bird last. The other way round, you’ll get in a tangle.
- From light to dark – dark shades are easy to add, but getting back to light from dark is hard.
- Mix more paint than you think you need – mixing exactly the same shade a second time is almost impossible.
- Choose one light source – and shade consistently from one side. This holds the shape together more than precise drawing. drawing class →
- Step back three paces – every ten minutes. Up close you see mistakes nobody will notice from the living room.
Painting Classes for Adults – What You Don’t Need to Buy
Before you spend your first three thousand crowns on paints, brushes and an easel, try it out at a class. The price of our experience painting includes a 40 × 50 cm canvas, acrylic paints, brushes, an easel, an apron and a welcome drink – you come empty-handed. The templates are sorted by difficulty and the instructor walks around the tables, giving advice right at your canvas. We run classes in more than 20 cities, with dates in the evening and at weekends.
